Unacademy founders Gaurav Munjal and Roman Saini are raising Longshot Capital, a Rs 700 crore AI and deep-tech fund.
A NewsBytes report says the fund has secured about Rs 300 crore in commitments and targets a first close by January 2027.
Longshot Capital is the pair’s first institutional fund. Munjal and Saini co-founded Unacademy in 2015 with Hemesh Singh. Both invest as angels, with early-stage bets over the past year.
Why the Unacademy Founders Are Raising a New Fund
The timing follows a clean exit. On September 1, 2026, upGrad completed its all-stock takeover of Unacademy, valuing the edtech firm at about Rs 1,955 crore. upGrad now runs the business.
That was roughly 94% below Unacademy’s 2021 peak, when the company was worth about $3.44 billion. The deal cleared the Competition Commission of India in July 2026.
Gaurav Munjal stays on as chief executive of Unacademy, the Bengaluru edtech firm, inside upGrad. He had said on September 1 that the company sold for a fraction of its peak value.
What this means for you: If you are an Indian AI or deep-tech founder raising an early round, a new operator-led fund is about to enter the market. Watch for Longshot Capital’s first close, targeted for January 2027, before you plan your next raise.
