StartupFeed Quick Take

  • GVFL led a Rs 3.7 Cr seed round in SpectraGaze Systems on October 23, 2026
  • First outside money for the Ahmedabad firm since it was registered on May 19, 2023
  • A hyperspectral camera for a 3U satellite is due with Kaynes Technology in November 2026

GVFL led a Rs 3.7 Cr seed round in Ahmedabad-based SpectraGaze Systems, the optical sensor maker’s first outside cheque since it started in 2023.

The Registrar of Companies record in Ahmedabad shows SpectraGaze Systems was registered on May 19, 2023. That is three years and five months of work on customer money alone.

Angel investors joined GVFL in the round, according to the announcement of October 23. The products SpectraGaze Systems builds are optical imaging sensors and electro-optical payloads for space, defence and science buyers.

Arup Banerjee founded SpectraGaze Systems in 2023, after 23 years as an ISRO scientist. He wants to cut India’s reliance on imported detectors.

What SpectraGaze Systems Has Already Delivered

SpectraGaze Systems has three named customers: ISRO, the Physical Research Laboratory and Kaynes Technology India. It has already handed ISRO an infrared detector and a test system. It also holds a contract to develop an image sensor for ISRO’s next-generation HRSAT programme, built with AMETEK.

A fourth win came from the defence ministry’s iDEX PRIME Challenge. The job there is an Infrared Detector Dewar Cooler Assembly made in India, detector included. PRL sits in Ahmedabad too and runs ISRO’s planetary and infrared astronomy research.

Kaynes Technology India is listed on the NSE and assembles electronics for defence and space. Two of those three customers are government bodies. That is the real asset here.

A supplier ISRO has already qualified is hard for a rival to push out.

Where the Seed Money Goes Next

The money will go to product work at SpectraGaze Systems, existing customer programmes, a bigger engineering team, better test gear and sales.

One deadline is already fixed. SpectraGaze Systems must deliver a hyperspectral imaging camera for a 3U satellite to Kaynes Technology in November 2026. A 3U satellite is a small cube-stack about 30 cm long.

After that the plan covers Earth observation, space-based surveillance, greenhouse-gas mapping and drone-mounted hyperspectral imaging.

GVFL has funded Indian companies since 1990 and sits in the same city. Mihir Joshi, who runs GVFL as managing director, said the money will widen engineering work and sales reach at SpectraGaze Systems across India.

Arup Banerjee, who founded SpectraGaze Systems, said paying customers did the early proving.

“Building the business through customer-funded programmes has helped us validate our technology”

What this means for you: If you build defence or space hardware in India, paid customer programmes can replace a seed round for three years. Check the iDEX PRIME route and ISRO supplier lists before you raise, because those orders are what GVFL paid Rs 3.7 Cr for.
