StartupFeed Quick Take
- DPIIT has recognised 2,50,046 startups as of October 27, 2026, crossing the 2.5 lakh mark.
- These startups report 25.42 lakh direct jobs, up more than 2 lakh since March 2026.
- Only 4,467 hold the Section 80-IAC tax certificate, leaving the three-year tax holiday mostly unclaimed.
India’s Startup India programme has crossed 2.5 lakh recognised startups and 25.42 lakh jobs, Commerce and Industry Ministry data showed on October 27, 2026.
The exact figure is 2,50,046 startups, spread across 770 districts and 56 sectors. StartupFeed set that beside the ministry’s own figures from the end of March. The jobs count has risen by more than 2 lakh in about seven months, and the recognised base by roughly 27,000.
One number stands out. Just 4,467 startups hold a Section 80-IAC certificate, the approval that grants a three-year income-tax holiday. That is about 1.8% of the recognised base, so recognition clearly travels further than the tax break itself.
The wider reform count is large too. The government lists 63 startup-specific reforms, including the end of the angel tax on share premiums. It has also cut 47,957 compliance rules across central ministries and the states.
The spread reaches well beyond the metros. About 52% of recognised startups sit in non-metro cities, and nearly 48% have at least one woman director.
Startup India By The Numbers, 2023 To 2026
The rise over three years has been steady rather than sudden. The four official checkpoints below show recognised startups and the jobs they report at each stage.
| Checkpoint | Recognised startups | Direct jobs |
|---|---|---|
| Dec 31, 2023 | 1.17 lakh | 12.42 lakh |
| Dec 31, 2025 | 2.07 lakh | 21.9 lakh |
| Mar 31, 2026 | 2.23 lakh | 23.36 lakh |
| Oct 27, 2026 | 2.50 lakh | 25.42 lakh |
State money sits behind the climb. The Seed Fund Scheme has reached 4,194 startups with Rs 775.67 crore, through 244 incubators.
The Fund of Funds, run by SIDBI, has committed Rs 12,623 crore to 166 funds. Those funds have put Rs 28,254 crore into 1,475 startups. The Credit Guarantee Scheme adds 532 loans worth Rs 1,662.71 crore.
Public buyers now count as well. Startups on the Government e-Marketplace have won 6.23 lakh orders worth Rs 68,105 crore. Their number on the platform has climbed from 7,929 in January 2021 to 43,260.
What this means for you: If you run a DPIIT-recognised startup but have not claimed the Section 80-IAC tax holiday, you are among the roughly 98% that have not. Apply to the Inter-Ministerial Board for the three-year income-tax break before your profits climb.
