StartupFeed Quick Take

  • India is now ChatGPT’s largest market in the world by weekly active users, OpenAI’s India head said on November 3.
  • The India user base has doubled since January 2026. In February it stood at 100 million weekly users.
  • OpenAI says UPI and payment announcements for India are coming in the next few weeks.

India is now ChatGPT’s largest market in the world by weekly active users. Prabhjeet Singh, OpenAI’s managing director for India, said so on November 3, 2026.

The India user base has doubled since January 2026. In an interview with The Economic Times, Singh said Indians now use ChatGPT across everyday work, not just for the odd question.

The jump is fast. In February 2026, OpenAI said India had crossed 100 million weekly users. That already made it the second-largest market, behind the United States.

At the time, India was about one in eight of ChatGPT’s roughly 800 million weekly users worldwide. Sam Altman, OpenAI’s chief, had called India the fastest-growing market and the second-largest by users.

Now India sits at the top. OpenAI has not shared a fresh headline number for the India user count.

Singh pointed to enterprises moving real work onto the tool. He named JioHotstar and Cars24 among the companies now using it in production.

The office base is in Delhi NCR, where local hiring began in August 2025. OpenAI has since announced plans for Mumbai and Bengaluru offices.

For infrastructure, OpenAI has a data centre deal with TCS. It starts at 100 MW and could scale to 1 GW.

What this means for you: If you build a consumer or enterprise product in India, your largest user pool now has a daily ChatGPT habit. Watch for the UPI and payment update in the next few weeks, as it changes how Indians will pay for AI.
