StartupFeed Quick Take

  • Paytm UPI market share was 8.1% of listed-app volume in September 2026
  • Vijay Shekhar Sharma set a one-third target, which needs 7.98 billion payments a month
  • September volume was 1.94 billion, so the gap is 6.04 billion a month

Noida-based Paytm wants one-third of India’s consumer UPI market, founder Vijay Shekhar Sharma told analysts on the company’s September-quarter earnings call.

NPCI’s app-wise data for September puts Paytm at 1.94 billion transactions, against PhonePe’s 10.91 billion and Google Pay’s 7.71 billion. Third place came with 8.1% of listed-app volume.

One-third of that pool means 7.98 billion payments a month. That is 4.1 times the September count. The gap is 6.04 billion.

StartupFeed worked that out from the September figures. All listed apps together handled 23.93 billion.

Sharma put the goal plainly on the call.

“So I am going to say that our target is to take one-third market share in this business. There is nothing less than that we will settle for.”

Vijay Shekhar Sharma, founder and chief executive, Paytm. From the Q2 FY27 earnings call, October 27, 2026.

Paytm UPI Market Share Would Have to Rise Four Times

The app-wise counts are published every month. In September 2026 the listed apps handled 23.93 billion payments between them. All UPI, listed and not, came to 24.07 billion.

That 6.04 billion gap is close to Google Pay’s entire September volume. Put another way, the target cannot be reached without passing Google Pay.

Sharma called market share the primary measure for his team. He said the goal does not depend on merchant fees arriving.

AppTransactions, September 2026Share of listed-app volume
PhonePe10.91 Bn45.6%
Google Pay7.71 Bn32.2%
Paytm1.94 Bn8.1%
The one-third target7.98 Bn33.3%

No date has been published for the target. The last row is arithmetic, not a forecast.

The Target Sits Above NPCI’s Own 30% Ceiling

The rule for third-party UPI apps caps any single app at 30% of transaction volume. The deadline to comply is December 31, 2026.

One-third is 33.3%. That is 3.3 points above the ceiling. A target met in full would sit outside the rule.

The cap has never been enforced. PhonePe sat at 45.6% in September and Google Pay at 32.2%. Both have been over the line for years.

Paytm has argued before that it would push harder on UPI once the cap starts to bite. The rule has been deferred since 2020. Nothing has replaced it.

So the target is also a bet. It assumes the ceiling moves, or that nobody applies it.

NPCI has not said what happens on January 1, 2027.

AI Replaces Cashback in the Acquisition Plan

The plan is to win users through product, distribution and targeted marketing. Cashback is not the main tool this time.

Sharma said in-house AI models now pick out users with higher spending value. That lowers the cost of adding each one.

The spending line shows it. Paytm’s earnings release of October 26 puts indirect costs at 46% of revenue, against 52% a year earlier.

Average monthly transacting users rose by 1 crore over the year to 8.5 crore. About 50 lakh of that came in July to September alone. It is the largest addition in nearly three years.

This was the sixth quarter running in which Paytm gained consumer UPI share. UPI transaction value grew 42% over the year, against 19% for the industry.

Merchant gross merchandise value reached Rs 7.1 lakh crore, up 26%. Merchants paying a subscription for devices reached 1.64 crore.

One Point a Year Is the Pace So Far

Paytm held about 7.1% of UPI volume in September 2025. A year later the figure is 8.1%. That is one percentage point in twelve months.

From 8.1% to 33.3% is 25.2 points. At last year’s pace that takes more than 25 years.

Volume is rising faster than share. Transaction value grew 42% in the quarter while the industry grew 19%. Share still moved by less than a point.

The market itself keeps growing. Holding a share takes work before gaining any.

Most of this ground was lost in 2024. The share was 12.86% in January that year, before the payments bank restrictions landed.

One quarter of steady gain is a real result. Twenty-five years of it is a different promise.

What this means for you: If you run a fintech or a merchant business on UPI rails, Paytm has made user share its first priority, not margin. Watch the monthly app data from November to see whether the share moves past 8.1%, and price your deals against that.

StartupFeed Insight

One-third is not a forecast. It is a flag planted. The share moved one point in twelve months, from 7.1% to 8.1%. At that speed, 33% is a quarter of a century away. The number that matters is not 33%. It is whether the September gain holds through the festive quarter, when every app buys volume. Smaller apps should watch this closely. Navi and super.money sit in the same growth lane and have thinner pockets. My call: Paytm’s share will be between 8.2% and 8.8% in the December 2026 data, and the one-third line will not be repeated as a dated target.
