StartupFeed Quick Take

  • India is the second-largest market for both ChatGPT and Claude, with more than 100 million weekly ChatGPT users as of February 2026.
  • OpenAI’s cheapest India plan, ChatGPT Go, costs Rs 399 a month. Claude’s entry paid plan, Claude Pro, costs Rs 2,000, about five times as much.
  • OpenAI opens offices in Mumbai and Bengaluru in late 2026. Anthropic opened its Bengaluru office on February 16, 2026.

OpenAI and Anthropic are the two United States labs behind ChatGPT and Claude. India is the second-largest market for both, after the United States. This guide sets out where OpenAI vs Anthropic in India actually stands in 2026. OpenAI had more than 100 million weekly ChatGPT users in India by February 2026. Anthropic counts India as about 5.8% of all Claude use worldwide.

The stakes are high. India is the only market outside the United States where either lab sees demand at this scale. Both launched their big India pushes in the same week, at the India AI Impact Summit in Delhi in February 2026. Both are now spending on offices, data centres and local deals to win the market. This guide compares what each has built in India: offices, enterprise deals, data centres and price.

Sam Altman put the opportunity in plain words:

“Through OpenAI for India, we’re working together to build the infrastructure, skills, and local partnerships needed to build AI with India, for India, and in India.”

Sam Altman, chief executive, OpenAI. From the OpenAI for India announcement, February 18, 2026.

OpenAI vs Anthropic in India: The Race in One View

Here is the state of play in October 2026, set side by side. Both labs run a local office. Both rank India as their number-two market. Both now bill in rupees. The real split is strategy, not geography. OpenAI is chasing scale and cheap consumer reach across hundreds of millions of phones. Anthropic is chasing enterprise contracts and coding work, where the revenue per user is higher.

Read down the two columns and the pattern is clear. One has gone wide, the other deep. The rest of this guide takes each column apart, starting with who actually uses them.

How Many Indians Use ChatGPT and Claude?

ChatGPT is far bigger in India by raw users. Claude is smaller, but its use is intense. OpenAI counted more than 100 million weekly ChatGPT users in India by February 2026. Sam Altman has said India is OpenAI’s second-largest market, and could soon be its biggest. Earlier, he met India’s IT minister to discuss building a low-cost AI market in the country.

Anthropic puts India at about 5.8% of all Claude use, behind only the United States. Before it opened its India office, the country already made up close to 6% of Claude conversations worldwide. The kind of use differs sharply. Close to half of Claude’s India use is coding and technical work. Education makes up about 12% of Claude use in the country. ChatGPT wins the crowd. Claude wins the keyboard.

What OpenAI Has Built in India

OpenAI has gone wide in India, across consumers, big brands and infrastructure. Its nationwide push, called OpenAI for India, launched on February 18, 2026, at the India AI Impact Summit in Delhi. OpenAI had already registered as a legal entity in India and opened a New Delhi office in 2025.

The centrepiece is infrastructure. OpenAI will be the first customer of Tata Consultancy Services’ HyperVault data centre business. The deal starts at 100 megawatts and can scale to 1 gigawatt. It sits inside OpenAI’s global Stargate plan and is built for data that must stay in India, including government workloads.

The enterprise push runs through Tata. Tata Group plans to roll out ChatGPT Enterprise to its staff, starting with hundreds of thousands of TCS employees. TCS will also use OpenAI’s Codex to standardise how its teams write software, and it is the first organisation outside the United States to join OpenAI’s certification programme.

Beyond Tata, OpenAI lists India deals with JioHotstar, PhonePe, CRED, Pine Labs, Cars24, HCLTech, Eternal and MakeMyTrip. On skilling, OpenAI is giving more than 100,000 ChatGPT Edu licences to institutions such as IIM Ahmedabad and AIIMS New Delhi. Two more offices, in Mumbai and Bengaluru, are due to open in late 2026.

What Anthropic Has Built in India

Anthropic has gone deep rather than wide, with one office and a coding-first pitch. It opened its first India office in Bengaluru on February 16, 2026, led by Irina Ghose, a former managing director of Microsoft India. Bengaluru is Anthropic’s second office in Asia, after Tokyo.

The growth has been fast. At the company’s Builder Summit that day, chief executive Dario Amodei said Anthropic’s India run-rate revenue had doubled in four months, and that Claude Code may have grown faster still.

Enterprise adoption in India is coding-led. Air India uses Claude Code to ship software faster. Cognizant uses Claude to modernise old systems. Razorpay has put Claude into its risk checks, and CRED reports faster feature releases. Infosys signed a strategic deal with Anthropic on February 17, 2026, to deploy Claude across telecom, finance, manufacturing and software. Startups such as Enterpret and Emergent are building on Claude too.

Anthropic also works beyond business. It backs the nonprofit Pratham on education and Adalat AI on a WhatsApp helpline for court access. It has tuned Claude for 10 official Indian languages, from Hindi and Tamil to Kannada and Urdu, because AI models still work best in English. Rupee pricing for Claude arrived on July 13, 2026.

ChatGPT vs Claude: Pricing in India

On price, OpenAI is cheaper at the entry level by a wide margin. ChatGPT Go is OpenAI’s cheapest paid plan, at Rs 399 a month. It is sold only in India and launched in August 2025. Claude has no budget tier of its own. Its entry paid plan, Claude Pro, costs Rs 2,000 a month on annual billing, or Rs 2,399 billed monthly. That is about five times the price of ChatGPT Go, with GST already included.

At the top end, the order flips. Claude Max starts at Rs 11,999 a month and undercuts ChatGPT Pro at Rs 19,900. Both labs offer a free tier. One more gap matters at checkout. OpenAI accepts UPI, while Claude took card payments only as of July 2026.

Which Should an Indian Founder Pick?

There is no single winner. The right pick depends on the job in front of you. For cheap, everyday access for a small team, ChatGPT Go at Rs 399 is hard to beat. For heavy coding and agentic development, Claude Code is the stronger tool, which is why close to half of India’s Claude use is technical. For data that must stay in India, OpenAI’s Tata data centre is the clearer answer, once its first 100 MW is live. For a regulated enterprise that wants tight guardrails, Anthropic leans hardest on safety. For the widest product range and the lowest entry price, OpenAI leads.

OpenAI and Anthropic are not the only choices. Google offers its Gemini AI Pro plan free to Jio users. Perplexity gives its Pro plan free to 360 million Airtel users for a year. India’s own Sarvam sells rupee-priced API access, with a Pro plan at Rs 10,000. For a cost-first founder, those free bundles can matter more than any single feature.

A quick checklist before you choose:

  • Match the plan to the task: cheap access, coding, or a full enterprise rollout.
  • Check where your data is processed if you handle regulated or government work.
  • Compare the real cost per seat each month, not the headline price.
  • Test both free tiers on your own workflow before you pay.
  • Confirm the payment method your finance team can use, UPI or card.

The India race is no longer about who has the better model. It is about who shows up on the ground.

About OpenAI and Anthropic in India

OpenAI and Anthropic are the two United States AI firms behind ChatGPT and Claude. India is the second-largest market for both, after the United States. OpenAI runs an office in New Delhi, with Mumbai and Bengaluru to follow, plus a Tata data centre deal. Anthropic runs a Bengaluru office led by Irina Ghose. Both now sell their plans in Indian rupees, and both treat India as central to their growth.

StartupFeed Insight

The numbers tell a simple story. OpenAI owns the crowd in India, with more than 100 million weekly users and a Rs 399 plan that no rival matches on price. Anthropic owns the harder, higher-value work, where close to half of its India use is code. Two things are worth watching next. First, whether OpenAI’s Tata data centre brings its first 100 MW online on schedule, which would hand it the data-residency pitch for banks and government. Second, whether Anthropic answers ChatGPT Go with a budget India plan of its own. My call: expect a cheaper Claude tier in India before the 2027 Union Budget.
