Quick Take

  • Mahindra Last Mile Mobility raised Rs 322 crore, hitting a Rs 10,822 crore valuation.
  • The round is led by Lightrock, with IFC and the India-Japan Fund joining.
  • Mahindra plans to list the business in the second half of FY27.

Mahindra Last Mile Mobility Limited has become a unicorn. The electric three-wheeler arm of Mahindra and Mahindra raised Rs 322 crore in fresh equity. That takes its post-money valuation to Rs 10,822 crore, or $1.24 billion.

The round is led by Lightrock, a global impact investor. Two existing backers joined in. They are the International Finance Corporation, part of the World Bank group, and the India-Japan Fund. The India-Japan Fund is managed by the National Investment and Infrastructure Fund.

Both existing investors used their pre-emptive rights under the shareholders’ agreement. The deal will close in tranches, subject to regulatory approvals.

The fundraise dilutes the parent’s holding. Mahindra and Mahindra’s stake in the unit falls to 75.79%, down from 78.11%. The parent keeps clear control.

Group CEO and Managing Director Anish Shah called Lightrock’s entry a pivotal milestone for the last-mile business. He said the money moves Mahindra closer to putting one million electric vehicles on Indian roads by 2031.

Why does this unicorn tag matter?

The unicorn tag matters because it values a commercial-vehicle EV maker at over $1 billion. Most Indian EV money has chased passenger cars. This round backs the workhorse end of the market instead.

Mahindra Last Mile Mobility builds the Treo and Zor range of electric three-wheelers. These carry people and cargo across the final stretch of a delivery. The vehicles fall in the L5 category, which covers high-speed, heavy-duty three-wheelers.

The company holds about 40% of the L5 electric three-wheeler market. That makes it the segment leader. It has been India’s largest electric commercial vehicle maker for four years running.

The wider shift is fast. Electric penetration in the L5 segment climbed from 12% to 40% in just two years. Passenger-car electrification has moved far more slowly.

How big is the business now?

The business is now selling at real scale. Mahindra Last Mile Mobility sold more than 136,000 vehicles in FY26. Of those, over 100,000 were electric.

That 100,000 figure was a first. No electric commercial vehicle maker in India had crossed one lakh EV sales in a single year before. Mahindra Last Mile Mobility got there in FY26.

Momentum has carried into this year. The company reported 85% volume growth year-on-year in the first quarter of FY27. Sales of its electric three-wheelers have grown sixfold over four years.

Usage is heavy too. Vehicles from the fleet have together covered 6 billion electric kilometres. That points to high utilisation by the drivers who own them.

What are Mahindra’s growth gems?

Growth Gems are the high-growth businesses Mahindra plans to scale, then list. The last-mile unit is one of them. Anish Shah has called out their transformative potential.

The strategy is to build first and list later. Shah said the focus is not on the listing itself but on scaling the business. Some of the Growth Gems will eventually go public.

Suman Mishra, Managing Director and CEO of Mahindra Last Mile Mobility, runs the unit. Under her, the business has led the electric three-wheeler market while readying itself for public investors.

When is the IPO?

The IPO is planned for the second half of FY27. Anish Shah confirmed the timeline on the parent’s first-quarter earnings call. He said the company remains on track for that window.

The fresh capital is meant to prime the business for that listing. It will fund product work and more capacity. The aim is to hold the lead in commercial EVs into the public phase.

What this means for you: If you invest in EV or mobility names, watch the commercial end, not just passenger cars. A 2027 listing gives public investors a rare pure-play bet on electric three-wheelers.

StartupFeed Insight

This round is priced off volume, not hype. Mahindra Last Mile Mobility crossed 100,000 EV sales in FY26 and grew 85% in Q1 FY27, so Rs 10,822 crore rests on units shipped rather than a story. The tell is who bought in. IFC and the India-Japan Fund are patient, development-minded money that tends to stay through a listing. Their re-up signals confidence in the FY27 timeline more than any press quote. The real test comes at the IPO. Expect Mahindra to file the draft papers for this business by mid-2027, and expect the L5 share number to be the first line every analyst checks.
