Service Details

Branded as Ai.R, the service is now available for booking by the general public. The commercial debut follows months of community engagement and pilot testing. Since January 2026, more than 1,000 trial users — including local residents and community representatives — have taken part in ride experiences, offering feedback that helped refine the service. To date, the Ai.R fleet has logged over 30,000 kilometres of safe driving.

The company and its partner are starting a very limited autonomous-car service along two approved routes with multiple possible stops in the city-state’s Punggol neighbourhood. An 11-vehicle fleet is designed to ferry residents to nearby amenities and transport links.

The two routes, curated with residents and Singapore’s Land Transport Authority, connect Punggol West to East (Matilda Court → Punggol Plaza → Oasis Terraces) and Punggol West to North (toward Punggol Coast Mall Bus Interchange). During the public trial phase, passengers can choose from multiple route options operating on weekdays between 9:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Rides will remain free until the service enters full commercial operation in mid-2026.

Both vehicles use a combination of advanced cameras and LiDARs to see up to 200 metres in every direction, detecting objects even in heavy rain.

The project’s momentum — progressing from Milestone 1 (M1) regulatory approval to full public operations in roughly seven months — highlights both WeRide’s technological readiness and Grab’s operational capabilities, as well as close coordination with local authorities.

Grab’s AV strategy has been multi-pronged: the company invested in US-based May Mobility Inc. in October and in remote-driving firm Vay in November, and took a stake in China’s Momenta in December 2025.

Workforce Transition

A notable aspect of the launch is Grab’s commitment to upskilling its driver-partners. The development of the Ai.R service has unlocked new career paths for Grab’s driver-partners, including roles such as Safety Operator and Remote Operator. More than 10 driver-partners are undergoing AV Safety Operator Training conducted jointly by GrabAcademy and WeRide.

What’s Next

Grab’s nascent venture into autonomous vehicles is unlikely to contribute materially to its top and bottom lines in the foreseeable future, but it is set to bolster the value of its app ecosystem to users. “It’s a solid pillar of the company’s user retention strategy and should strengthen Grab’s competitive position against rivals like GoTo,” Bloomberg Intelligence said. Full commercial pricing is expected in mid-2026, with broader Southeast Asian expansion to follow as regulations mature.
